Elizabeth Handley Wilmot

Elizabeth Handley was one of 14 children of Nathaniel Willmott (or Wilmot) & Elizabeth Edwards. She was the second wife of James Jenkins of Lower Trostrey farm, Glascoed. James was a gentleman farmer. They married at her home parish church (Llanddewi Fach, Monmouthshire) on 21st May 1847.

James had been widowed after one year of marriage (his first wife Eliza Milner died after a year and 3 days of marriage on 19th March 1844 at Glascoed). At the time of his first wife’s death, their only child (William Hercules Jenkins) was a small baby.

Elizabeth and James Jenkins had 7 children: James Wilmot Jenkins (1847-1897), Helena Jane (1849-), Nathaniel Handley (1850-), Mary Elizabeth (c.1851-), Arthur Wilmot Jenkins (c.1854-), Eliza Tabitha Jenkins (c.1856-) and Francis Edward Jenkins (c.1860-).

Elizabeth’s father Nathaniel was born in Yatton, Somerset 17 Oct 1769. Nathaniel married Elizabeth Edwards in St Michaels, Bristol on 15 Mar 1793. She was born in Cascob, Radnorshire on 21July 1769. Nathaniel died in Llanddewi Fach, Monmouthshire on 2nd December 1852. His wife Elizabeth died in the second registration quarter of 1852 in Pontypool registration district (I assume this was at Llanddewi Fach).

Of Elizabeth Handley’s 13 siblings, 5 of the 8 youngest lived & worked in farming in Llanddewi Fach, until at least the 1890’s. Their deaths were all recorded as Pontypool registration district. Only Elizabeth Handley who married James Jenkins actually lived in Glascoed, as far as I can see, though the others were not too far away.

Elizabeth Handley Jenkins died on 26th July 1892, just a few short months before the death of her husband, James. He died on 9th October 1892. Husband and wife were both buried at Panteg Parish Church.

Thanks again to Les Wilmot for providing this Biography.
